Eating Disorders

I know that this is primarily a drug addiction recovery blog, but in hopes that anyone in need of recovery inspiration for any kind of addiction or disorder comes to this tumblr for it, I have something I want to say.

There is nothing glamorous or cool about having an eating disorder. Unfortunately, our society puts way too much focus on skinny, skinny, skinny and it has brainwashed girls of all ages to believe that the only way they will be loved is if they fit into the mold of the “perfect woman”. On tumblr, there are a lot of girls who run thinspo or eating disorder blogs and this is very disturbing to me because a lot of these blogs send the wrong message. I know it is easy to look at a skinny girl on one of these blogs and think that the only way you can look like that is by starving yourself. This is not true. This is a cowardice and weak way to lose weight, and it is called a disorder for a reason. Eating disorders control your life, you become a victim to calories and you develop a cognitive distortion of your body. You become a prisoner to your eating disorder, you cannot go out with your friends, you are always paranoid about whether people will notice whether or not you’re eating, and you become obsessed with the constant feeling that you are “Fat”. Eating disorders are mentally, emotionally, and physically destructive and they are one of the hardest things to recover from.

Everyone has different bodies, we are all humans, and as long as we love ourselves, others will love us too. The worst thing you can do is compare yourself to other people. This is your life, your life alone to live, and this is the body you live it in. I cannot fathom why you want to destroy that body. The advantage of an eating disorder is not worth the abundance of disadvantages. I suggest that everyone avoid thinspo blogs which romanticize eating disorders. Your body is sacred and it should be valued and honored no matter the shape or size.

If you do want to lose weight because you want to live a healthier life style, there are a lot of fitspo blogs that encourage healthy eating and exercising that encourages positive living and self awareness as opposed to a distorted self-image and starvation.
